Peaceful? I don't think ... opposites, very much so!

Both defied the system & both were assassinated. So there's probably more commonality than appears at first glance? Mind you, the elements of the picture do portray a certain peaceful co-existence. Thanks for dropping in.

You are right Stephen about the fact that both defied the system and were assassinated. I think the similarities end right there. The means they used to achieve their goals were very different. While one was peaceful the other was violent (opposites). This is a quote from Ernesto Guevara’s Message to the Tricontinental: “hatred as an element of the struggle, a relentless hatred of the enemy, impelling us over and beyond the natural limitations that man is heir to and transforming him into an effective, violent, selective, and cold killing machine.” These are quotes from Gandhi: “Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapons of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man” and “Nonviolent acts exert pressure far more effective than violent acts for the pressure comes from goodwill and gentleness.” Without passing any judgment on the means, my point is that in that sense they were very much opposites. The fact that both images are displayed side by side is, in my opinion, what makes the photo appealing.

@Pinxi: Yes, I've seen the Che quote many times, usually it's quoted someone based in Miami. Literally, the quote doesn't sit comfortably with me and I suspect that it was political hype that suited the time and context. Your juxtaposition does highlight difference, but let's not turn this chat into 'quotations at 10 paces'. I'm more interested in what both Gandhi & Che were trying to change - the removal of oppression in their respective societies where the welfare of the well off relied on the mistreatment and exploitation of vast numbers of fellow citizens. Mind you, my picture merely depicts a boy surrounded by commodities that are devoid of meaning; and only those of a certain vintage/conviction care to explore further? Hope my other pix generate this much interest.
